Ludhiana, December 16… The Department of Processing and Food Engineering, PAU in collaboration with the Skill Development Centre organized two training camps on Entrepreneurship Development in Agro Processing for Better Livelihood, for the SC/ST candidates under AICRP on Post-harvest Engineering and Technology on 07.12.2022 and 13.12.2022 at PAU campus and Village Dhaipai (District Ludhiana), respectively. Approximately 50 participants attended the camps and benefitted under this scheme. Dr. M S Alam, Principal Scientist and Scheme In-charge of AICRP on PHET, PAU, emphasized on the concept of Agro Processing Complexes in getting quality products, reducing post harvest losses, employment to rural youth and achieving diversification concept in agriculture, besides improving the economic and social status. He also encouraged the trainees to adopt honey processing at domestic scale and use the facilities at the department for exploring livelihood opportunities in the agro processing sector. Dr. T C Mittal, Principal Extension Scientist and Head, Department of Processing and Food Engineering, introduced the trainees to emerging technologies for turmeric processing for greater economic rewards. Dr. Sandhya (Senior Scientist) demonstrated the techniques involved for processing of oilseed crops and introduced the trainees to the machines developed by the department. Dr. Rohit Sharma (Scientist) demonstrated the setting up of machinery involved in wheat and rice processing. Dr. Mahesh Kumar (Professor) discussed the production of jaggery and jaggery based products for handsome returns and Dr. Surekha Bhatia (Senior Biochemist) and Dr. Maninder Kaur (Scientist) demonstrated the practical aspects of jaggery production and quality assurance. Dr. Gagandeep Kaur (Food Microbiologist) shared information on production and processing of mushrooms as a subsidiary occupation for small and marginal farmers. In the end, machinery and equipment such as a moisture meter, oil expeller and honey processing unit were also shown to the participants. Sh. Sunil Dutt, Sh Bhag Singh and Sh. Sandeep Kumar assisted with the registration of the participants and distribution of free PAU literature and stipend. Participants were also given free processing kits, literature along with annual membership of Changi Kheti.
