The 33rd national level three-week ICAR sponsored Centre for Advanced Faculty Training (CAFT) programme on “Soil and Water Management for Sustaining Intensive Agriculture,” organized by the Department of Soil Science, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), concluded today. A total of 17 scientists from ICAR institutes and State Agricultural Universities representing eight states of the country attended the training programme. Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest Dr Shammi Kapoor, Registrar-cum-Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, exhorted the participating scientists to remain in contact with the faculty of Soil Science for technical guidance and expertise. He also emphasized on coming up with multi institutional projects, which is need of the hour. Dr Rajeev Sikka, Chief Coordinator, CAFT, informed that in all, 40 lectures and 11 practical were held besides visits to research farms of PAU. Lectures were delivered by eminent scientists on nutrient, water and residue management, alternate uses of crop wastes, agroforestry, organic farming, farming system approaches and precision farming techniques for enhancing input use efficiency, he told. Hands-on-training were given on ICAP-AES, ICAP-MS, Gas Chromatograph, AAS, CHNS analyzer, Cropping simulation modelling, SPAD meter and GreenSeeker, he added. Dr Sikka further informed that experts from Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal; Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan; Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu; and Punjab Remote Sensing Centre also delivered lectures. Dr OP Choudhary, University Librarian and Former Director CAFT; and Dr GPS Sodhi, Additional Director of Extension Education, PAU, also graced the occasion. Earlier, participants appreciated the efforts of the CAFT team comprising Dr MS Kahlon, Dr BB Vashisht and Dr Sandeep Sharma; and expressed their views on learning advanced concepts and methodologies during this training course. Later, Dr Jeevanjot Dhaliwal proposed a vote of thanks.
