PAU COLLABORATES FOR ROOFTOP VEGETABLE NUTRITION GARDEN MODEL

PUNJAB AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY Aiming at promoting nutritional security, the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has inked a pact with Simran Enterprises, Ludhiana for licensing of a Rooftop Vegetable Nutrition Garden model using soilless media technology. This is the ninth agreement for the Rooftop Vegetable Nutrition Garden model. Dr AS Dhatt, Director of Research, PAU and Mrs Ramandeep Kaur, Proprietor, Simran Enterprises, signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) on behalf of their respective organizations. Dr Dhatt congratulated the proprietors for sharing the responsibility of disseminating technologies developed by PAU. Dr Rakesh Sharda, Principal Scientist-cum-Principal Investigator, AICRP-PEASEM, Department of Soil and Water Engineering, informed that PAU is a pioneer in developing Rooftop Vegetable Nutrition Garden Model for the urban and peri-urban population using soilless media. The technology was developed under All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Plasticulture Engineering and Technology (PEAT) operating in the Department of Soil and Water Engineering, PAU, he told. “The technology requires only 12.6 sq m (net area = 4.2 m x 3.0 m), and gross area of 20 sq m (5.5 m x 3.6 m). The vegetable produced will be sufficient for a family of four. Seasonal winter and summer vegetables can be raised successfully using this model. With staggered sowing/transplanting, vegetables would be available round the year,” he explained. Different vegetables raised using this technology are spinach, lettuce, coriander, kale, cucumber, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, tomato, capsicum, brinjal, bitter gourd, chilli, mint, summer squash, etc. Dr Usha Nara, Plant Breeder, Technology Marketing and IPR Cell, informed that PAU has signed 311 MoAs of various technologies till date with different companies/firms. Dr Mahesh Kumar, Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology (Additional Charge); Dr JP Singh, Head, Department of Soil and Water Engineering; and Dr Angrej Singh, Senior Agronomist, Department of Soil and Water Engineering, PAU, were also present on the occasion.
